DSEAR & IGEM/SR25 Assessments

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations

A key requirement of DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) is that where a dangerous substance is or is liable to be present at the workplace, the employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to his employees which arise from that substance. As such, every employer shall classify places, at the workplace where an explosive atmosphere may occur, into hazardous or non-hazardous places.

A hazardous area is an area in which explosive gas/air mixtures are, or expected to be present, such as to require special precautions. It is therefore essential that hazardous areas are classified in terms of zones.

Conducting hazardous area classifications is essential as this then provides the basis for selecting the correct location and type of any electrical equipment is those areas. It can can also help to identify any additional control measures or additional measures required that will affect the overall classification such as inspection frequency, levels of ventilation.

Pipeline CC can support you in the assessment process through conducting a site visit, collection of data and lastly conducting a detailed IGEM/SR/25 assessment to determine the correct zone rating.

Ventilation Assessment

Assessment

The movement of air and its replacement with fresh air (bouyancy and wind driven) within a building or installation also affects the hazardous area classification. We can also support you in the review of current ventilation arrangements to determine whether it is:

  • ‘more than adequate’

  • ‘adequate’

  • ‘inadequate’

  • ‘poor ventilation’
